Tuesday, June 14th.
Today we introduced the concept of connected thinking through the story of Galileo. Galileo is a good example of someone who thought in a connected way because he discovered the Earth orbits the sun by discovering that 4 moons orbit Jupiter.
After that introduction to why we use mnemonics and imaginative association to discover our way into knew knowledge, we worked on learning the number icons and "cross streets" (ST & ST), i.e. Sound, Tint, Shape, and Time for each of the first 7 letter of the modern standard Arabic alphabet through coloring pictures.
After students colored in the seven pictures I tested them orally. They all did very well, getting roughly between 90 and 100% on the casual conversational exam. Below are copies of the pictures the students colored in (minus a drawing for Leslie who did not start officially until the 2nd day of class).
I ranked the pictures copied below in order of my favorites. The first picture is for the letter Alif (with hamza). The icon for the number 1 is a tree because it looks like the number 1. Then the cross streets of the letter are:
Sound = "e" or "a"
Tint = Light, non-emphatic letter
Shape: a straight line like the number 1 and a tree trunk
Time: Night, because it's a Lunar letter
This first picture is the best because it clearly shows the dim blue of the night sky, and then the others as I ranked them in order of my personal preferences are as follows. However, as long as the student learned the information, it doesn't matter if I like her picture the best, and in fact, it is helpful to look at all of them for diverse reinforcement:
